Electronics Day 2021 & 2022
Interactive platform to promote the electronics sector to students and job seekers.
Summary
Electronics Day 2021 and 2022 are virtual events produced during the pandemic to attract talent to the semiconductor manufacturing sector.
The event program was designed to not only aid students in learning more about the industry but also directly link them with potential employers.
With the goal of shedding the stigma surrounding a mature industry, this event successfully saw a turnout of more than 2000 students and an increase in turnout year-on-year. The event's success continues to encourage industrial partners today to support and host the event.

Role: Project Lead for JTC (Company Rep)
Duration: Q3 2020 — Q1 2021, Q3 2021 — Q1 2022
Skills: Creative Concept, Clients Outreach, User Interviews, Concept Pitch, Program Development, Design Research
Context: Produced as part of the government's initiative to attract talent in manufacturing sectors.
Project Overview
Following the success of Electronics Industry Day 2019, we were encouraged to organize a similar event in 2020. However, with the pandemic hitting the world at full force back then, we decided to take the event virtually.
In a time of uncertainty, the event objective remained clear: we wanted to provide an interactive platform to promote the electronics sector to students and job seekers.
Concept
To engage youths who might find the topic of Electronics / Semiconductors foreign, we needed to help them relate to electronics by showing them how apparent electronics are in their life and how involved it is in the things they love. In ideating concepts and the event program, we kept in mind the following guidelines:
Interactive & Intuitive
To allow users to easily interact with participating companies and prospective employers, the platform must have easy navigation and be user-friendly.
Immersive
At the peak of the pandemic when many people began craving social interactions, we wanted the experience to mimic the feelings that one would feel in a physical event.
Attractive
To encourage users to stay through the event and boost click-through rates, the platform had to be visually appealing; especially for the younger audience where aesthetics play a crucial role in attraction.
Fun
As the target audience was mainly the younger crowd, we wanted the experience to be relatable and enjoyable; drawing inspiration from video game success factors.
Mood Board
Lobby
Drawing inspiration from virtual lobbies, we wanted to allow users to concisely see the available features of the platform.
Additionally, we wanted to showcase the up-and-coming Jurong Industrial District (bottom right) to allow users to explore the features of the district while carrying out activities at the event.
Company Exhibition
To enhance the immersive experience, we considered realistic backdrops and a live agent guiding users on the company's exhibition page; much like a company representative at a physical exhibition. We also dabbled with the idea of a first-person gameplay perspective (bottom right) given the rising popularity of social video games during the pandemic.
Avatar/Gameplay
Expanding on the idea of gameplay, we imagined a group of people networking 'physically' via their avatars in the virtual world. The idea is to not let users feel alone at home during the event, and promote a sense of young community within the industry sector.
Final Outcome: The Event
To fulfill our objective, and following many iterations, we finalized two programs that ran simultaneously.
2021: Live Virtual Event
Hosted by Gillian, our representative from SSIA, we ran a virtual live event for 2 hours in 2021.
Event features included:
Plant Tours
Company sharing sessions
Panel Discussions
Day in a life of working in the semiconductor industry
Quiz (which turned out to be a big hit!)
The event ended with a quiz, testing participants' knowledge, and attentiveness during the event program, and winners stood to win attractive prizes.
2022: Hybrid Event
As the pandemic began to subside in early 2022, we hosted a hybrid event program where we invited industry leaders to gather, and hosted a panel discussion to share insights about the semiconductor industry.
For the virtual event, we recruited Kimberly Wang, a nationally-renowned DJ, to host which boosted more participants than in 2021.
Due to the success and positive reception of the quiz, we conducted it more often intermittently throughout the virtual event program in 2022.
& Website
The site featured over 30 company exhibitions ranging across the entire semiconductor lifecycle, career opportunities, and other initiatives such as a professional conversion program.
The website also went live days prior to the live event to gain traction and allow users to familiarize themselves with the site features.
The Result
The event attracted over 2000 enthusiastic students and job seekers, with many youths expressing their excitement in discovering the relatability of electronics in their life. The event's success encouraged the team to continue creating more purposeful and engaging activities to fulfill the objective. As live events were allowed to proceed again, Electronics Industry Day 2023 was once again brought to life.
